Recycling paper facts 100,000 tons of recycled materials are collected each year in the city of Phoenix (from 315,000 houses). 75% of this is paper and paper products including card, junk mail, magazines, cartons and newspapers. For every ton of recycled paper, a tree is saved. Today, more than 95 percent of paper is made from wood cellulose. Until the end of the 19th century, the process of papermaking involved extraordinary searches for rags to make paper. This fact must have been on the mind of this anonymous 18th-century English poet who penned the following verse: RAGS make paper PAPER makes money MONEY makes banks BANKS make loans LOANS make beggars BEGGARS make RAGS How was the rag stock made into paper?? The rags were dissected by stripping machines, and boiled in large vats for over twelve hours. After the boiling process, the rags are steamed, pressure-washed and rinsed for five hours. The rags are then bleached, drained, and "beaten" to reduce the bleaching chemicals and turn it into pulp. To attain the consistency that is needed, the pulp is transferred through tubes and valves. Eventually, it is pumped into the containers of the papermaking machine. The sheets that are made pass through two different rolls: a copper steam-heated drier roll and a polishing roll. The final product is divided into squares, packaged in volume, and shipped to vendors.
